The name of a region in southeastern Ireland. Ancient name Rhine. Originally originating from one of the five tribal kingdoms of early medieval Ireland. Also derived from that, one of the five counties of medieval Ireland. Occupying the southeastern part of the island, it frequently fought against the powerful Uí Neill (kings descended from the 5th-century suzerain Niall) in the north from the 5th century. After being invaded by King Henry II of England in the 12th century, it was effectively under the control of the Earl of Kildare until the 15th century, when King Henry VIII of England defeated the Earl in 1537. After that, it lost its semi-independent status and came under English control. Currently, it consists of 12 counties: Wicklow, Wexford, Westmeath, Offaly, Carlow, Kilkenny, Kildare, Dublin, Meath, Louth, Laois, and Longford. Area 19,794 ^km2 . Population approximately 1.85 million (1986).
