A French composer of Italian descent. Along with Lully, he is one of the leading figures in early French opera. Born in Aix-en-Provence, his father was from Turin. After serving as conductor at cathedrals such as Arles and Toulouse, he became conductor at Notre Dame de Paris in 1694. While composing church music, he produced theatrical works "Europe in Love" (1697) and "The Carnival of Venice" (1699). These are considered to be the first "opera-ballet" works in history, combining opera and ballet. In 1700, he resigned from his position as conductor at the cathedral and became the conductor at the Opera, while releasing a succession of operas, which increased his fame. In religious music, he followed in the footsteps of Delalande and produced many magnificent works in the Versailles style. In 1723, he became assistant conductor at the Royal Chapel under the reign of Louis XV, and in 1730, general director of the Opera. In his later years, he became ill and died in extreme poverty.
