A pass on the border between Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, and Minami Echizen Town, Nanjo County. It is 628 meters above sea level. It has been a gateway from Kinki to Hokuriku since ancient times, and the Hokuriku Tunnel currently passes directly underneath. The Nihon Kiryaku states that this pass was the steep road opened on Mount Kahiru in 830 (Tencho 7). The ancient Hokuriku road crossed the mountains from Matsubara Station (Tsuruga) to the eastern coast of Tsuruga Bay, but the location of Kahiru Station is unknown, so it is not known whether it crossed this pass. The mountainous area from the Shindo area of Minami Echizen Town to this pass is currently called Kaeruyama, but one theory is that it was behind Itsuhata in Tsuruga City. From the Middle Ages, a land route was taken through Shinbo (Tsuruga City), and this pass was crossed by both the Genpei and Taira armies, Dogen, Nitta Yoshisada, and Rennyo, and became a battlefield between Oda Nobunaga, the Asakura forces, and the Ikko Ikki. At the pass, there remains a stone-paved road and a teahouse with a kettle given by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and a little way down to the north is the Iuna Jizo. Fukui Prefecture is divided into two major residential areas, Reinan and Reihoku, by the mountainous area where this pass is located. It is a two-hour walk from Minami-Imajo Station on the JR Hokuriku Main Line.
