Utsunoya Pass - Utsunoya Pass

A pass between Utsunotani in Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City and Okabezakashita in Okabe Town, Fujieda City. It is about 170 meters above sea level. It is located between Maruko-shuku and Okabe-shuku on the Tokaido, and was known as one of the difficult spots. During the Nara period, it was common to cross Nihonzaka on the coast, but because it was steep, from the mid-Heian period onwards, people used the old Tsuta no Hosomichi road, which originated from a passage in the Tales of Ise, "When I reached Utsu Mountain, the road I was about to enter was very dark and narrow, and the ivy maples were thick..." Currently, near the top there is a monument to a poem by Ariwara no Narihira, "In the mountains of Utsu in Suruga, I have never met anyone, neither in reality nor in dreams." In the early modern period, with the construction of new roads, the saddle to the north of Izu-no-Hosomichi became Utsunotani Pass on the old Tokaido road, and the old road was abolished. This is the setting for the murder of Bun'ya in Kawatake Mokuami's representative domestic drama "Tsuta Momiji Utsunotani Pass." After the Meiji period, tunnels were built under the pass four times, in 1876 (Meiji 9), 1930 (Showa 5), ​​1959 (Showa 34), and 1998 (Heisei 10). National Route 1 runs through the New Utsunotani Tunnel, completed in 1959, and the Heisei Utsunotani Tunnel, completed in 1998, and the Izu-no-Hosomichi has become a hiking trail.

静岡市駿河区(するがく)宇津ノ谷と藤枝市(ふじえだし)岡部町(おかべちょう)岡部坂下との間にある峠。標高約170メートル。東海道の丸子宿(まりこしゅく)と岡部宿との間に位置し、難所の一つとして知られた。奈良時代は、海岸部の日本坂を越えるのが普通であったが、急峻(きゅうしゅん)なため、平安中期以後は『伊勢物語(いせものがたり)』の「……宇津の山にいたりて、わが入らむとする道はいと暗う細きに、蔦楓(つたかえで)は茂り……」に由来する蔦の細道の古道が利用された。現在、頂上付近に在原業平(ありわらのなりひら)がよんだ「駿河なる宇津の山辺(やまべ)のうつつにもゆめにも人にあわぬなりけり」の歌碑がある。近世初期、街道整備により、蔦の細道にかわって、その北の鞍部(あんぶ)が旧東海道の宇津ノ谷峠となり、古道は廃止された。ここは河竹黙阿弥(もくあみ)の世話物の代表作『蔦紅葉宇都谷峠(つたもみじうつのやとうげ)』の文弥殺し(ぶんやごろし)の舞台となった所。明治以後、1876年（明治9）、1930年（昭和5）、1959年（昭和34）、1998年（平成10）の4回にわたって峠下にトンネルが構築された。1959年完成の新宇津ノ谷トンネルと1998年完成の平成宇津ノ谷トンネルを国道1号が走り、また蔦の細道はハイキングコースとなっている。
