...Among these cynodonts, the first mammals were those with a developed secondary palate, the degeneration of the dentary bones in the jaws that hold the teeth, the formation of the mandible, and the formation of a complete jaw joint. The oldest known mammals in fossil form are the late Triassic Morganucodon (triconid) and Kuehneotherium (anticonid), found in Wales, England, South Africa, and Yunnan, China. These animals were small and mouse-like.
