Chloranthus glaber (English spelling)
A small evergreen shrub of the Cerastaceae family. It is widely distributed from the temperate to tropical regions of Asia, and in Japan it grows naturally in mountain forests west of the Tokai region. It is also commonly cultivated as a garden tree. The stems are 50-80 cm tall, green and soft. The nodes are slightly raised, and the leaves are cross-opposite, with serrated edges only on the upper half. In summer, compound spikes of small yellow-green flowers bloom at the top of the stem. After the flowers, round red fruits are produced in winter. There is a yellow-fruited variety , C. glaber var. flava .
