Japanese: 蕃坊 - ばんぼう（英語表記）fan-fang

During the Tang and Song dynasties in China, settlements (fangshi) for foreigners (banjin) were established in Guangzhou, Quanzhou, and other areas where foreign trade was conducted. The banjin were Persians and Arabs. Banbo were not located within the city walls, but were mainly established outside the city walls to facilitate trade. There was an office called Banchoshi, and a chief called Bancho or Tobancho managed the affairs and invited foreign merchants from overseas. The chief was a virtuous man appointed by the government from among the foreign residents, and was entrusted with trying minor crimes, so the banbo had a kind of extraterritoriality.

中国，唐・宋時代に外国貿易の行われた広州，泉州などに設けられた外国人 (蕃人) の居留地 (坊市) 。蕃人はペルシア人，アラビア人らであった。蕃坊は城内にはなく，おもに通商に便利な城外に設けられた。蕃長司という役所があり，蕃長，都蕃長などと呼ばれた長が事務を管理し，海外の蕃商を招いた。蕃長は，外国人居留民のなかから徳望の高い人が政府から任命され，軽い犯罪の裁判をゆだねられたので，蕃坊は一種の治外法権的な存在であった。
