This Otani-ha Shinshu temple is located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Its mountain name is Taishizan. According to temple legend, it was founded by Renko, who converted to Shinran's Mikawa Ryudo as a monk, but it is a branch temple of Kuwako Myogenji Temple and was established by his grandson Rengan. It was originally a Takada-ha temple, but seems to have switched to the Honganji-ha when Honganji was still in existence, and in 1461 (Kansho 2) it was issued a principal image with a Rennyo inscription. The head priest at the time, Nyoko, is famous for going to Kyoto when Honganji was demolished and settling the matter by presenting a tribute to Mount Hiei. In 1484 (Bunmei 16), Nyoko's disciple book records that it had formed a large power with 105 branch temples and dojos. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
