Giselle - Jiselle (English spelling)

Giselle - Jiselle (English spelling)

A two-act ballet. With a libretto by T. Gautier, Saint-Georges, and J. Coralli, music by A. Adam, and choreography by Coralli and J. Perrot, it premiered at the Paris Opera in 1841. The dancers in the premiere were C. Grisi (Giselle) and J. L. Petitpa (Albrecht). Gautier wrote part of the libretto inspired by Heine's "Fairy Tales." Giselle, a village girl, falls in love with a young man named Lois, but when she finds out that Lois is actually a prince named Albrecht and has a fiancée, Giselle dies from a heart attack during a frenzy of dancing (Act 1). It is said that girls who die before marriage become fairies called Willis in the forest, and Giselle becomes a Willi who makes any man who passes through the forest dance until he dies, but she goes against the other Willis and desperately saves Albrecht, who comes to the forest to visit his grave (Act 2). The first act is full of folklore and the second act is full of fantasy, with the girls dancing in white romantic tutus. This is a representative work of romantic ballet, with G. Ulanova, Y. Chaubilet, and C. Fracci all famous as dancers of Giselle.
