Imamura Shiko - Imamura Shiko

Japanese painter. His real name was Jusaburo. He was born in Yokohama on December 16, 1880. In 1897 (Meiji 30), at the age of 17, he became a student of Matsumoto Fuko. In 1898, he was selected for the Japan Art Association Exhibition, and from the following year, he exhibited at the Japan Art Academy and Japan Painting Association Joint Exhibition. In 1901 (Meiji 34), he formed the Kojikai with Yasuda Yukihiko, a student of Kobori Tomomoto, and others, and further joined the Tatsumigakai in search of new horizons in historical painting. In 1907, he became acquainted with Okakura Tenshin and visited the Japan Art Academy Research Institute in Izura (Ibaraki Prefecture) to further his research. "Gokarei," exhibited at the 5th Bunten Exhibition in 1918, shows the results of such efforts, while the eight-panel "Eight Views of Omi," exhibited at the 6th Bunten Exhibition the following year (1919), attracted attention as an innovative landscape painting that blended Nanga and Post-Impressionist styles. In 1919, he traveled to India. In the same year, he participated in the revival of the Japan Art Institute as a member, and at its first exhibition he exhibited two volumes of "The Book of Passion," his masterpiece, with its bold composition and clear colors. In the same year, he founded the Sekiyokai with Hayami Gyoshu, Omoda Seiju, and Nakamura Gakuryo, and continued to be passionate about the modernization of Japanese painting, but in the following year he fell ill and passed away on February 28, 1916, at the young age of 35. Other well-known works include "Sermon," "Wind God and Thunder God," and "Shiomizaka."
