...The prefectural capital city, located in the northwestern tip of Wakayama Prefecture and facing the Kii Channel. Population 393,885 (1995). The city originated as a castle town of Wakayama Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi near the mouth of the Kinokawa River at the end of the 16th century. After the Asano clan, Tokugawa Yorinobu, who entered the country in the early 17th century, expanded the castle town, and since then it has flourished for about 300 years and 14 generations. After the Meiji Restoration, the prefectural government was established and it became the political, economic and cultural center of the prefecture. In 1889, it became the first city in the prefecture to be incorporated as a city, but its population was just over 50,000 and its city area was only 8.6 km2.
