...Most of the town area is made up of the Kasanohara Plateau of Shirasu, and the alluvial lowlands created by the Kushira River and Kimotsuki River are in the eastern and southern parts. In the past, it was the site of Kushira-in, Shimazu Manor County, and in the early modern period, together with Higashikushira Town to the east, it formed Kushira District, which was directly controlled by the Satsuma Domain. However, when the town and village system was implemented in 1889, it was divided into Higashikushira Village and Nishikushira Village, and when the town system was implemented in 1932, Nishikushira Village became Kushira Town. The fields of the Kasanohara Plateau and the rice paddy areas in the Kimotsuki River basin have long been plagued by cliff collapses and floods that are characteristic of Shirasu, but disasters have decreased through farmland conservation projects and the Kasanohara Farmland Irrigation Project. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kushira-go" is listed below.
