Kushira Township

...Most of the town area is made up of the Kasanohara Plateau of Shirasu, and the alluvial lowlands created by the Kushira River and Kimotsuki River are in the eastern and southern parts. In the past, it was the site of Kushira-in, Shimazu Manor County, and in the early modern period, together with Higashikushira Town to the east, it formed Kushira District, which was directly controlled by the Satsuma Domain. However, when the town and village system was implemented in 1889, it was divided into Higashikushira Village and Nishikushira Village, and when the town system was implemented in 1932, Nishikushira Village became Kushira Town. The fields of the Kasanohara Plateau and the rice paddy areas in the Kimotsuki River basin have long been plagued by cliff collapses and floods that are characteristic of Shirasu, but disasters have decreased through farmland conservation projects and the Kasanohara Farmland Irrigation Project.

…町域の大半はシラスの笠野原台地からなり，東部と南部には串良川，肝属川が作る沖積低地が展開する。古くは島津荘寄郡串良院の地で，近世は東接する東串良町とともに薩摩藩直轄の串良郷を形成していたが，1889年の町村制施行により東･西串良村に分割され，1932年の町制施行によって西串良村が串良町となった。笠野原台地の畑地，肝属川流域の水田地帯は古くからシラス特有の崖崩れ，洪水に悩まされてきたが，農地保全事業，笠野原畑地灌漑事業によって災害は減少した。…
