Greco-Roman style

A general term for Greek-style art created during the Roman period. After defeating Greece in the naval Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, Rome inherited the artistic traditions of its conquered Greek predecessors. They developed Greek art stylistically to create a uniquely Roman art style, but at the same time, they praised and imitated Greek art of the past as something to emulate and something classic. They brought in countless works of art from Greek lands to decorate public facilities, sanctuaries, palaces, and private homes, but this was still not enough, so they had contemporary artists copy Greek art en masse.

ローマ時代につくられたギリシア風美術の総称。前31年のアクティウムの海戦でギリシアを屈服させたローマは，造形芸術においては被征服者であるギリシア人の美術を継承した。彼らはギリシア美術を様式的に発展させてローマ独自の美術を生んだが，他方では，過去のギリシア美術を手本にすべきもの，古典的なものとして賛美し，模倣した。そして公共施設，聖域，宮殿，私邸を飾るために，おびただしい数の美術作品をギリシア人の地から運び込んだが，それだけではなお足りず，ギリシアの美術作品を当代の美術家たちに大量に模倣させた。
