...Yi Dynasty scholar Li Yi Yi interpreted Jo as meaning the East and Joseon as meaning the Xianbei people. The English word Korea comes from the pronunciation of Goryeo (Koryŏ) and was probably introduced by the Yuan dynasty, which built a great empire spanning the world. Other names and pen names for Korea include Sanzenri Geumsu Gangsan (3,000 Korean ri from north to south), Geunyu (where the Rose of Sharon blooms), Cheonggyi (Cheongkyu), Gyerim (originally another name for Silla), Han, and Haedong.
