A deciduous tall tree of the Araliaceae family (APG classification: Araliaceae). It is 15 meters tall and has gray-brown bark. The leaves are palmately compound with 5 thin leaflets, each of which is ovate-oblong, 10-20 cm long, and has a long stalk 7-30 cm long. The flowers bloom in August in a pale yellow-green compound umbel with a long stalk at the end of the branches that grew that year. The fruits are berries that ripen to black in September and October. It is widely distributed in the mountains from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and its yellow leaves are beautiful in autumn. It was named after the resin liquid extracted from the bark and strained to make a paint (called gonzetsu). It is also called gonzetsunoki, based on the phonetic reading of kinzu. The wood is used for making utensils such as boxes, chopsticks, ladles, and fan ribs, as well as for matchsticks. Young shoots are edible.
