Gion no Nyōgo Kokonoe Nishiki

Japanese: 祇園女御九重錦 - ぎおんにょうごここのえにしき
Gion no Nyōgo Kokonoe Nishiki
Joruri. Historical piece. Five acts. A collaboration between Wakatake Fuemiya and Nakamura Agye. First performed at the Toyotakeza Theater in Osaka in 1760. Influenced by old Joruri such as "The Origin of the Sanjusangendo Mune," the third act tells the story of a willow spirit, and the fourth act tells the story of the conflict between Taira Tadamori's wife, Ikedono, and Gion no Nyōgo. The third act was well received, and it was independently performed in 1825 under the title "The Origin of the Sanjusangendo Mune," and has been performed under this title ever since. Oyanagi, a willow spirit, makes a promise to Yokosone Heitaro, who saved her life, and gives birth to a son, Midorimaru, but the original willow tree is cut down to be used as the ridgepole of Sanjusangendo, and Oyanagi leaves the human world with regret. The "Kiyari" part, in which Midorimamaru and Heitaro drag the willow to the capital, is famous. It is also performed in Kabuki.
