King of ancient Assyria. Reigned 704-681 BC. In Akkadian, Sin-aḫḫe-eriba. Son and heir to the throne of Sargon II, the founder of the Sargonid dynasty. He personally led campaigns into Babylonia and Elam six times (703-689 BC), western Iran once (702 BC), Cilicia and the north once, and Syria and Phoenician Palestine once (701 BC), maintaining the borders of the great empire left by his father. The siege of Jerusalem against Judah's King Hezekiah during the Palestinian campaign is detailed in the Old Testament, although there are some discrepancies with the king's inscriptions.
