Yonejiro Noguchi - Yonejiro Noguchi

Poet. Born December 8, 1875 in Tsushima-cho, Ama-gun, Aichi Prefecture (now Tsushima City). His signature as an English poet is Yone Noguchi. He dropped out of junior high school in his hometown and moved to Tokyo in 1890 (Meiji 23), where he studied at Keio Gijuku and other universities. In 1893, at the age of 19, he went to the United States alone, continued his education, and became a reporter for a Japanese newspaper in San Francisco. He became a student of Oakland poet Walkin Miller, and became familiar with the works of Poe, Whitman, Keats, and others, which helped him develop his ability to enter the poetry world. Three years after moving to the United States, he published his first collection of poems, "Seen and Unseen" (1896), and in 1902 he traveled to London and self-published "From the Eastern Sea" (1903). He returned to Japan in 1904 (Meiji 37), and the following year, he became a professor of English at his alma mater, Keio University, where he worked for 40 years and was made a professor emeritus. He has written over 30 books, including poetry collections such as "Poems of a Dual National," "An Apple Falls," "Silent Blood," "Selected English Poems by Noguchi Yonejiro," and "Standing on the Mountain." His style of poetry is conceptual, but he was known abroad under the pen name "Yone Noguchi." He died on July 13, 1947.

詩人。明治8年12月8日愛知県海部(あま)郡津島町（現津島市）生まれ。英詩人としての署名はYone Noguchi。郷里の中学校を中途退学して1890年（明治23）上京、慶応義塾などに学んだ。93年、19歳で単身渡米して苦学を続け、サンフランシスコの日本字新聞社の記者となった。オークランドの詩人ウォーキン・ミラーの書生となり、ポー、ホイットマン、キーツらの作品に親しんで詩壇へ登場の力を養った。渡米後3年目に第一詩集『Seen and Unseen』（1896）を出版、1902年にロンドンに渡り、詩集『From the Eastern Sea』（1903）を自費出版した。04年（明治37）帰国、翌05年から母校慶応義塾大学英文科教授となり、40年間勤務して名誉教授となった。『二重国籍者の詩』『林檎(りんご)一つ落つ』『沈黙の血汐(ちしお)』『野口米次郎英詩選集』『山上に立つ』などの詩集のほか30余冊の著作がある。詩風は観念的であるが、「ヨネ・ノグチ」の筆名で外国にも知られるスケールがあった。昭和22年7月13日没。
