Japanese: カエデチョウ(楓鳥) - カエデチョウ（英語表記）gray waxbill

A bird of the family Acanthidae (illustration) in the order Passerine. It is about 10 cm long, and much smaller than a sparrow. Sexes are the same color. The front and back of the eyes and the beak are crimson red, the back is gray-brown, and the underside is light brown. The lower back and tail are black, making them very conspicuous when flying. It is found along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, across the center of the African continent, from Ethiopia to Senegal. It lives in scrub forests in semi-desert areas, and also likes thorny areas around agricultural fields. It breeds monogamously. It builds its nest at the base of grass or shrubs using the tips of dead grass leaves, with an egg-shaped roof.

スズメ目カエデチョウ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約10cm，スズメよりずっと小さい。雌雄同色。眼の前後とくちばしは紅赤色で，背面は灰褐色，下面は淡褐色。腰と尾は黒く，飛ぶときによく目だつ。サハラ砂漠の南縁に沿って，アフリカ大陸中央を横断するように，エチオピアからセネガルにかけて分布している。半砂漠地の低木林にすみ，農耕地のまわりのとげやぶのある場所も好む。一夫一妻で繁殖する。巣は草や低木の根もとに枯草の葉先を使って卵形の天井のついた巣をつくる。
