Deep-sea submersibles were developed for the purpose of conducting submersible diving experiments and exploring ocean trenches, and proved effective in the exploration of the sunken nuclear submarine Thresher by the Trieste II in 1961, and in the exploration of hydrogen bombs off the coast of Spain by the American Alvin and Alminaut (built in 1964, maximum operating depth 4,500 m). However, in recent years, many submersibles have been built for relatively shallow waters for offshore oil development and continental shelf surveys, and are used for marine biological research, geological research, and the inspection of underwater structures.
