A genus of filamentous cyanobacteria, it has heterotypic cell filaments and forms chains and akinetes (resting spores), similar to the genera Anabaena and Cylindrocarpus , but is distinguished by the fact that its cell filaments are embedded in a common agar-like substrate to form colonies. There are many species, and they grow in a variety of places, including mountain streams, creeks, hot springs, and gardens. Many species are edible, including N. verrucosum (L.) Vauch., commonly known as Kamogawa moss or Anegawa jellyfish, N. commune Vauch., and N. commune Vauch.var. flagelliforme (Berk.et Curt.) Born.et Flah., a highly prized species in Chinese cuisine. Born.et Flah.
