Carved lacquer

Japanese: 彫漆 - ちょうしつ

〘Noun〙 A technique of lacquer art. A method of carving patterns into layers of lacquer, and the lacquerware made from it. In Japan, there are types called Tsuishu, Tsuikoku , Benika Ryokuyo , Guri, and Hashibori, while in China they are called Tsuikou, Tsuikou, and Tsuikou . This technique began around the Song dynasty, flourished in the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and was imported to Japan during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, where it was highly valued. The same name can refer to different techniques in China and Japan.

〘名〙漆芸の技法の一つ。漆を塗り重ねて文様を彫り表わす方法。また、その漆器。その種類には、日本では堆朱(ついしゅ)・堆黒(ついこく)・紅花緑葉・屈輪(ぐり)・はしか彫りなどと呼ばれるものがあり、中国では剔紅・剔黒・堆紅(ついこう)などと称されている。この技法は宋代ごろから行なわれ、元・明に盛んになり、日本には鎌倉・室町時代に輸入されて珍重された。中国と日本では、同一の名称についても異なった技法を指す場合がある。
