Nenjibutsu - Buddhist altar

Japanese:
Nenjibutsu - Buddhist altar

A statue of a Buddha or Bodhisattva that is privately revered, worshipped daily, and remembered by chanting sutras. Also called a personal Buddha, inner Buddha, or pillow Buddha, it was also called a guardian Buddha because it was kept in the camp during wars and was carried around on the go. Small ones are often placed in a shrine or altar, but sometimes a room in a home is used as a hall, or a separate shrine is built to house a large statue. The Amida Triad in the Lady Tachibana Shrine at Horyuji Temple is famous as the oldest personal Buddha in Japan, belonging to Lady Tachibana, the mother of Empress Komyo. The various Buddha niches at Kongobuji Temple, which Kobo Daishi is said to have brought back from China and made into pillow deities, are carved from fragrant sandalwood, including the niches, Buddha bodies, and other decorations, and when the lid is closed, they form a single cannonball shape that is easy to move.
