A city in the Zabaikalskiy Krai in the south of Eastern Siberia, in central-eastern Russia. It is located about 200 km east of Chita, facing the Nercha River near its confluence with the Shilka River. A Russian fortress was built in 1654, and after the Treaty of Nerchinsk was concluded in 1689, it prospered as a trade stop between Russia and Qing. It gradually declined as Chita to the west rose to prosperity and the Trans-Siberian Railway was laid through the south, leaving the city behind. There are factories producing electrical equipment and meat processing, as well as a local museum. A branch line runs through the city from Priskoby Station on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Population 15,748 (2002). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
