Riverbank - Kashi

Riverbank - Kashi
In ancient and medieval times, the stakes and poles used to moor boats were called kashi, and were written as kine. Later, the landing area for boats was called kashi. During the Edo period, kashi was a place for river boats to dock, built to facilitate the transport of luggage and people. As the volume of goods circulated by river boats increased, the shogunate's magistrates and feudal lords built and maintained new river banks in various regions. Each river bank was inhabited by river wholesalers, boatmen, boatmen, and day laborers who loaded and unloaded cargo, and teahouses and inns for travelers to rest in, as well as markets, which flourished. In the Kanto region, the shogunate conducted a wide-ranging river bank survey in the late Edo period, officially recognized river banks, established river bank wholesaler stocks, and imposed taxes. After the Meiji period, they declined and disappeared due to the development of railways and the spread of automobile transport.
