...It is carnivorous and feeds on the flesh of dead animals. In ancient Phoenicia and Egypt, it was collected together with the Syrian mullet Bolinus brandaris (English name purple dye murex. Shell height 7 cm, diameter 4 cm) to obtain purple dye from the subbranchial gland of the soft body.
