Flat [village] - Taira

Japanese: 平[村] - たいら

A village in Higashitonami County in the southwest of Toyama Prefecture. Population 1,620 (1995). Located on the border with Gifu Prefecture, upstream of the Shogawa River, it is known as Gokayama along with Kamitaira and Toga villages. A typical isolated mountain village, it was part of the Kaga Domain in the early modern period. With the development of power sources along the Shogawa River and the construction of national highways from the end of the Taisho period, the lifestyle of this region, which was once known as a hidden region, changed and depopulation progressed. Trout and char are farmed, and folk craft washi paper is produced. The 23 gassho-style buildings of the Ainokura settlement are designated as a national historic site, Hakusan Shrine, the Murakami family home, and the Uma family home are designated as important cultural properties, and the Kaga Domain's exile hut is a prefectural cultural property.

富山県南西部，東砺波（ひがしとなみ）郡の村。人口1620(1995)。庄川上流の岐阜県境にあり，上平村，利賀（とが）村とともに五箇山（ごかやま）と呼ばれている。典型的な隔絶山村で，近世は加賀藩領であった。大正末からの庄川水系の電源開発，国道の整備によって秘境と呼ばれたこの地域の生活様式も変化し，過疎化が進行した。マス，イワナの養殖，民芸和紙の生産が行われる。相倉（あいのくら）の合掌造集落23棟は国史跡，白山宮，村上家および羽馬家住宅は重要文化財に，加賀藩の流刑小屋は県の文化財に指定されている。
