...The panopticon, a surveillance system invented by J. Bentham, was the product of this "excess of seeing" not leading to enjoyment but rather to a so-called "tyranny of the visual sense." The inventors of the modern panorama are said to be J. A. Breysig (1766-1831), an architectural painter from Danzig (now Gdansk), and R. Barker (1739-1806), a painter from Edinburgh. The latter re-created a landscape of Edinburgh in 1788, and after obtaining a patent, held a show in London in 1794, changing the image twice a year. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Barker, R." is listed below.
