Czechoslovakian poet. He studied philosophy in Prague, but participated in avant-garde literary activities from an early stage and became known as a surrealist. He was also involved in the anti-fascist movement as a Communist Party member, and in the late 1930s he left surrealism to pursue a career as a communist poet, even being arrested by the Gestapo (secret state police). His many works include collections of poems that show his rich sensitivity and imagination, such as "Pantomime" (1924), "Edison" (1928), "Song of Peace" (1950), and "From Home" (1951), plays such as "The Sun Still Sets on Atlantis" (1956), unfinished memoirs and children's stories, as well as novels, essays, and adaptations of translated plays.
