This refers to rocks that contain the source material of petroleum and are thought to be the source of petroleum. Generally, fine-grained sedimentary rocks such as black or dark gray shale, mudstone, and limestone that have not been subjected to much thermal alteration are considered to be source rocks. They are also called petroleum host rocks, but this term is not used much these days. According to organic matter analysis of source rocks, excellent source rocks are considered to be those that contain 1% or more organic carbon and 200 ppm or more petroleum hydrocarbon extracts in the case of shale and mudstone, but recently the evaluation criteria have been expanded to include those that contain 0.5% or more organic carbon and 50 ppm or more petroleum hydrocarbon extracts.
