Oxidation and reduction

Japanese: 酸化･還元 - さんかかんげん

In the narrowest sense, oxidation refers to a substance combining with oxygen, and reduction refers to an oxide losing oxygen. For example, when copper (Cu) is heated in air, it undergoes the reaction 2Cu + O ₂ -- → 2CuO to become copper oxide (CuO). At this point, copper is said to be oxidized. When copper oxide is heated in hydrogen, the reaction occurs CuO + H ₂ -- → Cu + H ₂ O, and copper oxide loses oxygen, isolating copper. This is said to be copper being reduced.

狭義の定義として，物質が酸素と結合することを酸化oxidationといい，酸化物が酸素を失うことを還元reductionという。たとえば，銅Cuを空気中で加熱すると，　2Cu＋O₂―→2CuOの反応をして酸化銅CuOとなる。ここで，銅は酸化されたという。また，酸化銅を水素中で加熱すると，　CuO＋H₂―→Cu＋H₂Oの反応を起こして，酸化銅は酸素を失って銅を単離する。これを銅が還元されたといっている。
