A deciduous tree of the Anacardiaceae family that grows wild in the mountains and fields of Japan, reaching a height of 5-10 m (illustration). The leaves turn beautiful red in autumn. The twigs, petioles, and inflorescences are densely covered with brown down. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, 25-40 cm long, and the rachis and petioles are usually winged. There are 7-13 papery leaflets, 5-12 cm long, ovate, elliptical, or oblong, with coarse sawtooth edges, and densely covered with gray-brown down on the underside. In summer, panicles 15-25 cm long are produced at the tips of the branches, and many small white flowers grow on them.
