Ibn Ḥawqal

Japanese: イブン･ハウカル（英語表記）Ibn Ḥawqal

Geographer of the 10th century. His biography and birth and death dates are unknown, except that he was a Muslim and was born in Nisībīn in the Jazira region. He traveled widely in the 10th century Islamic world, from Spain and Sicily to Mawarā al-Nahr. He was probably also involved in commerce. His major geographical work, The Travels and Countries, is based on the work of the same name by Istahri but incorporates his own experiences and observations, making it an important work in the history of geography, and contains particularly valuable information on the economic conditions of various places in his time.

10世紀の地理学者。イスラム教徒で，ジャジーラ地方のニシービーン出身ということ以外には，伝記，生没年ともに不詳。10世紀のイスラム世界をスペイン，シチリアからマー･ワラー･アンナフルまで広く旅行した。おそらくは商業にも携わっていたのであろう。彼の地理学の主著《道里および諸国記》は，イスタフリーの同名の著を基礎としつつ，彼自身の経験･観察も取り入れた地理学史上の重要な著作で，同時代の各地の経済状態については特に貴重な情報を含んでいる。
