The powerful clan on Tsushima from the end of the Heian period to the middle of the 13th century was the Abiru clan, a local government official. Although their origins are unclear, they are presumed to have entered the island and settled there in the latter half of the 9th century. From the latter half of the 13th century, the So clan came to power in their place.
