Born: September 8, 1588, Oase Died September 1, 1648. Paris. French philosopher and mathematician. He studied at the Royal Academy of Laflèche (1604-09) and in Paris, and entered the Minimo Society in 1611. After teaching philosophy at a monastery in Nevers, he settled in Paris in 1620. He had connections with many scholars, and his monastery was called the Mersenne Academy. His friend at the academy, Descartes, also frequented the academy, and the refutation and reply to Descartes's Meditations were made possible through his mediation. In 1625, he wrote his magnum opus La vérité dans les sciences (The Truth of the Sciences) as a dialogue that summarized his previous refutations of skepticism. He then turned to scientific research, but did not believe that science could attain absolute truth. His interests were as wide as encyclopedias, but his most famous scientific work is his music theory Harmonie universelle (36-37). His extensive collection of letters is also a valuable historical document that conveys the state of academia at the time.
