Gera - Gera (English spelling)

A city in the state of Thuringia in central Germany. It was part of the former East Germany from 1949 to 1990. It is located at an altitude of 205 meters on the Elster River, which flows down from the Elster Mountains, separating the Thuringian Wald and the Erzgebirge mountains. It has a population of 112,800 (2000). It is an old town that first appeared in records in 995 and obtained city rights in 1237. After the railway was established, industry developed rapidly and it grew into the second largest city in the Thuringia region. The traditional textile industry was joined by machinery, brewing, food, and luxury goods (mainly meat products), while the traditional industry of musical instrument manufacturing disappeared. 50,000 workers are employed in the mining of bismuth in Ronneburg in the east, which began in 1950.

ドイツ中部、チューリンゲン州の都市。1949～90年は旧東ドイツに属した。チューリンガー・ワルト山地とエルツ山脈を分ける、エルスター山脈から流下するエルスター川沿いの標高205メートルにある。人口11万2800（2000）。995年に初めて記録に現れ、1237年に都市権を得た古い町で、鉄道が通じてから工業が急速に発展し、チューリンゲン地方第二の都市に成長した。伝統的な繊維工業に、機械、醸造、食品、嗜好(しこう)品（おもに肉製品）の工業が加わり、一方、伝統産業であった楽器製造工業は消滅した。1950年に始まった東方ロンネブルクのビスマス（蒼鉛(そうえん)）採掘に5万人の労働者が従事している。
