An element contained in germ cells that is passed on to the next generation through individual development and fertilization. A. Weissmann divided the cytoplasm of an egg into germ plasm, which contains the determinants of cell differentiation, and somatic cytoplasm, and proposed the theory of germ plasm continuity, which states that cells that receive germ plasm become germ cells and are passed on from generation to generation, clearly distinguishing between soma and germ plasm. In amphibians, a special ribonucleic acid-rich cytoplasmic material contained in the primordial germ cells that will become gametes in the future is located under the cortex of the vegetal pole before cleavage, and moves into these cells during cleavage. This cytoplasmic material is specifically called germ plasm.
