Born: December 7, 1823 in Lignitz
[Died] December 29, 1891. German mathematician from Berlin. Born into a Jewish merchant family. Influenced by E. Kummer, a teacher at the gymnasium in Lignitz, he showed an extraordinary interest in number theory. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1845. He worked in the family business until he was 30 years old, and carried out mathematical research in his spare time. After he had made enough money to live comfortably, he turned to mathematics and taught at the University of Berlin (1861-83), succeeding Kummer as professor (1883). He made many achievements in the fields of elliptic functions, algebraic equations, and algebraic number theory. He was particularly skeptical of the significance of non-constructive existence proofs, and debated with K. Weierstrass. He was also passionate about solving mathematical problems using only natural numbers, rejected G. Cantor's set theory, and opposed J. Dedekind's theory. He famously said, "God created only the integers; all other numbers are the work of man."

ドイツの数学者。ユダヤ人商人の家庭に生れる。リグニッツのギムナジウムで，当時，同校の教師であった E.クンマーの影響を受け，整数論に異常な興味を示した。 1845年にベルリン大学で学位を取得。 30歳まで家業に励み，数学研究は余暇に行なった。生活に困らないだけの財をなしてから数学に転じ，ベルリン大学で教え (1861～83) ，クンマーの跡を継いで教授に就任 (83) 。楕円関数論，代数方程式論，代数的数の理論などの分野で多くの業績を残した。特に非構成的存在証明の意義に疑いをもち K.ワイエルシュトラスと論争し，また数学上の問題を自然数だけで解決しようと熱中，G.カントルの集合論をも排除し，J.デデキントの理論とも対立した。「神は整数のみを創造したもうた。その他の数はすべて人間の手になるものである」とは，彼の有名な言葉である。
