Another name for the Upper Paleolithic art of Europe. It is so named because many ruins from this period have been found in southwestern France and the Cantabria region of northern Spain. In particular, most of the ruins of cave art (paintings and carvings carved into the rock walls deep inside caves) and rock shelter art (reliefs carved into the walls of exposed rocks) are concentrated in this region. They can be broadly divided into three groups based on their location: (1) Those found in the Dordogne and Charente regions of France, particularly along the Vézère River, centered around Les Eyzies‐de‐Tayac‐Sireuil.
