...When an oceanic plate sinks, the sedimentary layers that have accumulated on top cannot sink, but are scraped off at the base of the landward slope of the trench and added to the land mass on the landward side, forming slopes with complex topography in some places. Also, on the ocean side of the trench, a marginal swell, which is a bulge corresponding to the bending of the plate, is formed. On the landward side of the trench, there is an island arc containing a volcanic chain, as can be seen in many trenches in the Western Pacific Ocean.
