…During World War I, he was expelled by the Ottoman authorities in 1915 and went to the United States, but returned to Palestine in 1918 and organized a Jewish legion under the British Army to fight against the Ottoman Empire. In 1920, he founded the Hiṣtadrut (Jewish Labor Union or Israeli Labor Union) and became its secretary-general, in 1930 he founded the Mapai Party (later the Labor Party) and became its leader, and from 1935 to 1948 he was chairman of the Jewish Agency, playing a leading role in establishing a Jewish state in Palestine under the Mandate. On May 14, 1948, he issued the Declaration of Independence of Israel, which he himself had played a central role in drafting, and immediately became prime minister and minister of defense of the Provisional Government. …
