...In Germany, the magazine Brief, die neueste Litteratur betreffend (1759-65), founded by F. Nicolai, had Lessing and M. Mendelssohn as editors, creating a tradition of literary magazines. German magazines featured literary content more than any other in Europe, such as Frankfurter Gelehrten Anzeigen (1772-90), edited by Goethe, and Allgemeine Literatur‐Zeitung (General Literary Newspaper) (1785), which was called the ``father of German periodicals.'' In America, the golden age of critical magazines emerged at the end of the 18th century with the publication of such works as the Pennsylvania Magazine (1775), edited by T. Paine, the American Museum (1787), the Massachusetts Magazine (1789), and the New York Magazine (1790).

…ドイツではF.ニコライの創刊した《ブリーフェBriefe,die neueste Litteratur betreffend》(1759‐65)誌に，レッシングやM.メンデルスゾーンが編集委員として参加し文芸雑誌の伝統をつくった。ゲーテが編集に参画していた《フランクフルター･ゲレールテン･アンツァイゲンFrankfurter Gelehrten Anzeigen》(1772‐90)や，〈ドイツの定期刊行物の父祖〉といわれた《アルゲマイネ･リテラトゥーア･ツァイトゥングAllgemeine Literatur‐Zeitung(総合文芸新聞)》(1785)など，ドイツの雑誌はヨーロッパのどの国よりも文芸的な内容を特色としていた。アメリカでは，T.ペインの編集した《ペンシルベニア･マガジンPennsylvania Magazine》(1775)をはじめとして，《アメリカン･ミュージアムAmerican Museum》(1787)，《マサチューセッツ･マガジンMassachusetts Magazine》(1789)，《ニューヨーク･マガジンNew York Magazine》(1790)などにより18世紀末に評論雑誌の全盛時代が出現した。…
