A novel by the French author A. Gide, published in 1926. Prior to this, Gide had only given the terms récit (story) or sautee (farce) to his novelistic works, but he named this work a roman (novel) because he was confident that he had realized his own unique view of the novel. In contrast to récits and sautees, which can only depict fragments of a life map, the author believed that a roman must be able to depict the whole of a life map in a complex and multi-layered way. Because humans live by using masks, that is, by using "counterfeit money," the whole picture cannot be grasped from the limited perspective of récits and sautees.

フランスのA.ジッドの小説。1926年刊。これ以前の小説的作品には，レシ(物語)かソティ(茶番)の呼称しか与えなかったジッドだが，この一作だけをロマン(小説)と命名したのは，ここに彼独自の小説観を実現しえたという自負があったからだろう。レシやソティは人生図の断片を断片的にしか描きえないのに反して，ロマンは人生図の総体を複合的･重層的に描きうるものでなければならぬと作者は考えていたのである。人間は仮面によって，すなわち〈贋金〉を使って生きているのであるから，視点の限られたレシやソティではその総体を把握することはできない。
