Nubia was a region of great economic and military importance to Egypt since ancient times, as a source of gold and timber, a transit point for tributes from the interior of Africa, and a place for recruiting many mercenaries. It is divided into Lower Nubia (ancient name Wawat) in the lower reaches of the country, which was under Egyptian rule, and Upper Nubia (ancient name Kush, called Aethiopia by the Greeks) in the upper reaches of the country, which was under Sudanese rule. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Upper Nubia" is listed below.
