Herring oil (Nishinyu)

Japanese: ニシン油(鰊油) - にしんゆ（英語表記）herring oil

This oil is extracted from herring by boiling. Along with sardine oil, it once accounted for the majority of fish oil produced in Japan, but the amount currently extracted is extremely small. Hokkaido is the main production area. Its ingredients and uses are similar to sardine oil. Its specific gravity d ¹⁵ = 0.9161-0.9212, refractive index n _D ²⁰ = 1.4720-1.4740, saponification value 185-190, iodine value 99-120, contains a lot of higher unsaturated fatty acids, and has an unpleasant odor.
