Twenty-third night - Nijuusanya

It is one of the Tsukimachi (moon-waiting) events held on the 23rd day of the lunar calendar, and is widely observed throughout the country. Some places hold it every month, but most often it is held three times a year, in January, May, and September. November 23rd is Daishi-ko day, so it is also widely observed on this day. In some areas, only men observe the 23rd night, while women observe it on the 22nd night. As the moon rises late on the 23rd night, people gather at the house on duty and chat while waiting, eating simple food and drinks. In places where the 23rd night lecture is held, there are some cases where a monument called a 23rd night tower is erected. In some areas, the appearance of the moon on the 23rd night is used to predict the harvest of the year.

旧暦23日の月待(つきまち)行事の一つで、全国に広く行われている。毎月行っている所もあるが、いちばん多いのは1、5、9月の3回に行っている例である。11月23日は大師(だいし)講の日なので、この日も広く行われている。土地によっては二十三夜は男だけで、女は二十二夜にしている所もある。二十三夜の月は出が遅いので、当番の家に集まって簡単な酒肴(しゅこう)を前によもやま話をして待つ。二十三夜講をつくっている所では二十三夜塔という記念碑を立てている例もある。二十三夜の月のさまを見てその年の作物の豊凶を占っている土地もある。
