...When someone dies, the ancestral spirits in the underworld also visit the deceased wearing distinctive masks and costumes that represent them, and perform part of the funeral. Among the Jukun, when someone dies, men from a certain society (called akua fan) visit the house where the deceased died wearing masks and costumes that represent the ancestral spirits, summon the women one by one, ascertain the cause of death (death is believed to be caused by female relatives), and thus allow the deceased to go to the underworld with peace of mind. Among the Yoruba, the dead return home once a year.
