Organometallic compounds of lead, iron, manganese, etc. are known to have knocking prevention effects, but the most well-known are alkyl lead compounds such as tetraethyl lead (C ₂ H ₅ ) ₄ Pb, tetramethyl lead (CH ₃ ) ₄ Pb, and ethylmethyl lead. When small amounts of these are added to gasoline along with auxiliary agents such as ethylene bromide and ethylene chloride, the octane number of the gasoline increases by 5 to 15.
