The inhabitants of this archipelago, which consists of 19 islands in the Bay of Bengal, are a mix of indigenous people, Malays, Burmese, and South Indians, and speak different Austroasiatic languages depending on the region. The majority of the population lives on the northernmost island, Car Nicobar. They trade palm nuts with the Malay Peninsula and other areas, and canoes and pottery are traded between the islands of the archipelago. The Shom Pen people who live in the interior of the southernmost island, Great Nicobar, have the custom of hunting and raising boars to use as sacrificial animals.
