Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 963-969. A military emperor from the powerful Phokas family in Asia Minor. Under the rule of Romanos II, he recaptured Crete from the Muslim army (961). After the death of Romanos II, he married Empress Theophano and became emperor along with the previous emperor's son. He recaptured Cyprus (965) and Antioch (969) from the Muslim army. He favored the large landowners and generally adopted a strict financial policy, but was assassinated by General John (later John I), who conspired with his wife Theophano.

ビザンティン皇帝。在位963‐969年。小アジアの大豪族フォカス家出身の軍人皇帝。ロマノス2世治下にクレタ島をイスラム軍から奪回(961)。同帝死後皇妃テオファノTheophanōと結婚，先帝の遺児と並んで皇帝となる。キプロス島(965)，アンティオキア(969)をイスラム軍から奪回。大土地所有層を優遇し，一般には厳しい財政方針で臨んだが，妻テオファノと共謀したヨハネス将軍(後のヨハネス1世)に暗殺された。
